Battle Monument, West Point

The Battle Monument honors the first battle victims of 1861. The monument was funded totally by their surviving comrades. The granite was quarried from Stony Creek, in Branford, Connecticut. The column came from a single piece of stone, worked into its final form, and then put on a train for shipment. From the train, it was placed aboard a boat to cross the Hudson River and then brought by truck to West Point.

The names of the honored are inscribed on tablets on the monument itself. At the top of the Tuscan-style column is the statue of winged Fame, holding a wreath and a trumpet. The monument was dedicated in 1897.

Print fits in a mat size of approximately 10-3/8 inches by 7-15/16 inches.
