It is the third largest church in the world. The building seen today is the result of an expansion, begun in the fourteenth century. The bell tower was designed by Giotto and completed in 1359 by his pupils Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti. The dome was designed by Brunelleschi and built between1420 and 1436. Still today it is the largest brick dome in the world.
