La Bocca della Verita`, Rome, Italy
"The Mouth of Truth" is a mask of marble, possibly of the face of the Roman god Jupiter. It was originally a manhole cover for the Roman drainage system. The name the "Mouth of Truth" was created in 1485, from a medieval legend which said the mouth could bite liars' hands. Jealous husbands would bring their wives there and ask them if they were unfaithful. If the woman told the truth, then, when she placed her hand inside, her hand would be safe from harm.
Print fits in a mat size of approximately 10-3/8 inches by 7-15/16 inches.
